Sanjay Puri- Bringing the US and Indian Communities together
Sanjay Puri is a recognized authority on U.S.-India relations. He serves as the Chairman of the U.S.-India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), a national, bipartisan political action committee representing over 2.7 million Indian-Americans and as the President of AUSIB (The Alliance for U.S.-India Business). USINPAC works closely with members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, as well as with the administration, to ensure that the issues of the Indian American community are addressed. Strong ties between US and India are important to most Indian Americans as these are two countries with shared values. To continue strengthening this relationship, Sanjay Puri believes it is important to keep the political, economic and cultural dialogue moving between the two countries.
The Indian diaspora in the US has evolved as a strong community over the past few decades and Sanjay Puri believes in strengthening the trade relations between the two countries further via different activities involving trade promotion, educational exchange and by creating opportunities for dialogue, interaction and exchange between its citizens on different levels. The ties between the US and India have changed dramatically over the past two decades. It has strengthened to bring about new visions and substantive gains for both the countries. The increasing number of Indian Americans living in the US has also given birth to great expectations and hopes.
The relationship between India and the United States is propelled by shared values between the two countries as far as democracy, rule of law and free markets are concerned. The relationship is growing on a three pegs i.e. cultural through intellectual and cultural exchanges with a growing number of Indian students visiting the US for studies and a significant number of professionals from India working in the US, the second peg is economic and there is great momentum for shaping economic growth which has grown despite hiccups in the global economy owing to the dynamism of the American and Indian entrepreneurs and finally the third peg is the political relationship, given the importance of India in a very dangerous part of the world, the growth has been remarkable. Joint defence exercises, high level meetings, communication on key issues like Afghanistan and the Middle East are a great sign of a maturing relationship.
The collective result of growth on cultural, economic and political interaction has resulted in a relationship that has never been better and will continue on this trajectory despite who is in power in the US or in India. Sanjay Puri happens to speak frequently on U.S.-India relations and the growing political impact of the Indian-American community in the US. He has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Times, on the National Public Radio (NPR), the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the CNN & Nightline.
